Stand behind the shadows and breathe

When walking through the ‘valley of shadows,’ remember, a shadow is cast by a Light.” – Austin O’Malley

I remember as a kid going to Disneyland and going on the jungle cruise. Whenever we would come up on the other side of the waterfall, the captain of the boat would make mention of it. That was what the backside of water looked like.

For whatever reason, that thought has been ingrained in me ever since.

Sometimes with my photography I get unknowingly into a rhythm and start taking pictures that represent a specific look or feel. I never plan these out, they are always there waiting to be seen, my job is to be alert and to simply look for them.

For awhile I was taking a lot of road shots that captured different glimpses of backdrops while others simply wanted a certain emotion to be drawn.

Recently I have been taking a lot of pictures from within the forest settings in which I hike. In these pictures, it is that which dwells from behind the trees that sets up the shot as the sun light comes crashing down into the forest of trees scattered about the nature’s floor.

With each picture, glimpses of glory and its mystique creates a life of its own as their shadows cover the trails before you. And if you’re really still, they might even begin to dance upon these very trails.

With each picture, perhaps I am chasing something that frankly I unknowingly catch with each trip to the hill on days like this, but never wrest away.

The other side of the shadow.

On this side of the shadow I stand in awe at the contrast of dark and light with hints of Glory just past the forest’s edge. On the other side of the shadow, one can only stand amidst the warmth of the Light and breathe.

Funny. We act like human beings when amidst the shadows but more like human doings when amidst the Light that causes these very shadows.

One is effect. One is cause. Beyond the shadow, they both collide like two hands from the same Being thunderously applauding life’s breath. Glory resides here. It’s what happens when God’s kiss touches the rim of His creation.

Oh how He loves us.

“He dawns on them like the morning light, like the sun shining forth on a cloudless morning.” – 2 Samuel 23:4 (ESV)

“Hope is like the sun, which, as we journey toward it, casts the shadow of our burden behind us.” – Samuel Smiles
