In a land so far away, a muslim call to prayer rang out across the village.
As we pulled up, children from all directions quickly surrounded us. We may not have spoken their language, but we did have little stickers with smiley faces on them to remind them that they are loved.
Look closely at the picture before you. How many stickers do you see? Look closely at those around you. How many stickers do they need?
This convicts me on so many levels.
For one, when a simple sticker with a smiley face can bring such joy to children of one village half way around the world, how much does it take for us to find joy in the littlest of things when cast before us? That is, if we aren’t too busy to notice.
Secondly, I don’t have to travel thousands of miles away to know and see that there are many all around me right now this very moment that could use some encouragement, or in this case, a whole lot of stickers with smiley faces on them. That is, if we aren’t too busy to notice.
I read a proverb once that said that the cheerful look of a messenger brings joy to one’s heart and this makes me think.. what a fantastic way to live.
At some point, the call to prayer that was ringing out across the village had gave way to the sounds of children smiling and laughing. I’m not sure when that happened. The children just kept coming. And with them, so did joy.
